What's in a Good Skincare, Part 2

Next up in our list of important skincare products is a mud mask. We all love to feel pampered and loved on and the feeling of a great mud mask tightening and cleansing the skin is definitely at the top of my self-care routine list!

But why? What is it about a mud mask that makes it so great? Do we even need a mud mask? I'm here to say yes! And here's why!!

Environments pollutants take the form of light, energy, heat and noise. Think chemical air pollutants, EMF,s UV light, dust, ozone, carbon monoxide, cigarette smoke, etc. While many of these particles may be too large to penetrate the skin, the chemicals which attach themselves to those particles are not.

Our skin, which is the first layer of defense against these pollutants, is highly susceptible to this continuous barrage. Some of the effects of pollution on the skin include premature skin aging, dryness, rashes and irritation, cancers, dullness, roughness, etc. This is caused by oxidative stress which according to MDMagazine is defined as "an over-production of destructive reactive oxygen species (ROS) and an inability of the body’s natural antioxidant network to neutralize them before they do damage to skin and other organs. The generation of ROS is initiated by 3 major components relating to pollution: particulate matter, ozones, and aryl hydrocarbon receptors (AhR)."

Yikes! That doesn't sound so great! So what are some options to prevent or at least slow down this process. Limiting exposure to these things is the most obvious answer but not always an option, especially if living in a city. So creating another barrier can help. UV protection is one of the easiest options. Wearing hats or a safe product with SPF such as our loose Mineral Foundation creates a barrier to block some of these pollutants. Antioxidants and hydration are absolutely critical in maintaining skin health.

And here's where the mud mask comes in. Keeping your skin healthy is not just frivolous self-indulgence. As you can see by the potential skin issues listed above, your skin is your first line of defense and you want to keep it happy!!

But will any old mask do the trick? No!!! There are a lot of simply natural alternatives but corporations have picked up on this idea of detox. Let's take a peek at what they're putting in their products. I took a look at department store products as well as MLM products that are marketed as 'safe', 'natural' and even 'plant-based'. Just an fyi, these phrases are not regulated and can be put on any product regardless of the truth. Here's what I found.

Fragrances: the quickest way to know if a products is safe or not. Fragrances? Put it back. Fragrances is a code name for 'may contain thousands of chemical compounds that we don't want to tell about' otherwise known as trade secrets. Fragrances are chemical compounds that contain phthalates and formaldehyde which affect the central nervous system and can lead to depression, hyperactivity and other behavioral problems.

Phenoxyethanol: infant oral exposure was found to cause acute nervous system dysfunction. Linked to skin reactions from eczema and hives to anaphylaxis. Generally it is used in small quantities which are less harmful, but how are you going to know how much is too much??

Butylene Glycol: it's a petroleum product. If we're trying to reduce pollution, reducing our reliance on petroleum products is a great start! Plus most petroleum products contain other toxins that you won't find on that ingredient list. It's a humectant but in sensitive people can be irritating to the skin, eyes and nasal passages.

So what do I recommend? I love Keep Me Safe's Rejuvenation Glacier Silt. 1 ingredient sourced far from man made pollutants in the freshwater glacier lakes of Europe.  Mud is one of nature's most potent anti-inflammatory agents. Mud facials are terrific for treating acne and other skin disorders.

-remove makeup and dirt
-aid in the release of impurities through the pores
-firm and smooth the skin
-support cell regeneration
